1. Start With the Floor
A rubber floor protects the floor underneath and the equipment on it. Our tiles are 1 m × 1 m, so a 3 × 3 m room takes 9. For most home gyms, 15mm suits general training and moderate dumbbell work, and 20mm suits free-weight areas and heavier dumbbells.
Garages, sheds and garden rooms are fine if the floor is dry and level. Plan the room with the gym floor planner, or read about garage gym flooring and what you can lay it on.
2. Then the Weights You'll Use Most
For most home gyms we suggest a set of hex dumbbells with a rack: the 2.5–15kg set is a sensible first set, and heavier sets run up to 50kg. Fill gaps with single pairs or build your own set.
Kettlebells, from 4kg to 40kg, need very little floor space.
3. A Bench
A flat bench (130 × 50cm) fits beside a dumbbell set on its A-frame rack in a 2 × 2 m corner. The adjustable bench also sets to incline and decline. Compare both in weight benches.
4. A Bar and Plates, If There's Room
If a 6ft or 7ft Olympic bar fits, with room at each end to load plates, add cast iron or bumper plates and a pair of collars. All our bars and plates are 50mm Olympic.
For cardio, the Concept2 RowErg is 244cm long; the BikeErg and SkiErg are the other options.
Home Gym Equipment FAQs
How much space do I need for a home gym?
A 2 × 2 m corner holds a dumbbell set on an A-frame rack (59 × 36cm) and a flat bench (130 × 50cm). A barbell needs more: a 6ft bar is 183cm long and a 7ft bar 220cm, plus room at each end to load plates. A Concept2 RowErg is 244cm long.
What should I buy first for a home gym?
We suggest a floor first, then the weights you'll use most, then a bench, then a barbell and plates if a 6ft or 7ft bar fits the room.
Can I put rubber gym flooring in a garage or garden room?
Yes, if the floor is dry and level: garages, sheds and garden rooms are fine. The tiles are made for indoor use, though, so they aren't recommended outdoors. They are water resistant, not waterproof, and outdoor use isn't covered by the warranty.
How is a home gym order delivered?
Orders over 100kg travel on a pallet, on a rigid lorry with a tail-lift. Pallets are delivered kerbside onto a solid surface, not over gravel or steps, and someone needs to be there to receive them; a smaller 7.5-tonne vehicle can be requested. Delivery is free on UK mainland orders over £300. See delivery information for rates and times.
Do you sell squat racks or gym machines?
No. We don't sell squat or power racks, weight-stack or cable machines, treadmills, wall plate storage or yoga mats. Our cardio machines are Concept2's RowErg, BikeErg and SkiErg, plus an indoor spin bike.
