6ft vs 7ft Olympic Barbell: Which Should You Buy?
The 7ft Olympic barbell is the full-size standard. It weighs 20kg — the same as the bars you will find in most gyms — and its length suits squat racks, benches and power cages, so your plates sit comfortably outside the uprights. If you train in a garage, spare room or anywhere space is tight, the 6ft Olympic barbell weighs 15kg and is easier to manoeuvre and store, while still taking the same Olympic plates.
Both bars come with collars included and feature durable knurling for a secure grip, with precision-machined sleeves that spin freely under load. Whichever length you choose, they use the Olympic 2" (50mm) sleeve standard, so any plate from our weight plates range will fit.
Specialty Bars: EZ Curl and Hex Trap Bar
A straight bar is not always the best tool for the job. The Olympic EZ curl barbell has a cambered shaft that angles your hands into a more natural position for curls, skull crushers and other arm work — at £44.99 with collars included, it is an easy addition to any setup.
The hex Olympic trap bar puts you inside the bar with a neutral grip on each side. Lifters use it for deadlifts, shrugs and loaded carries, because standing within the frame shifts the load in line with your body rather than in front of it. Both specialty bars take standard Olympic 50mm-bore plates, so they share the same set of weights as your main bar.
What Plates Fit an Olympic Barbell?
Every bar in this collection uses Olympic 2" (50mm) sleeves, which means they pair with our full plate range: rubber-coated tri-grip weight plates with built-in handles for easy loading, classic cast iron plates, and drop-friendly bumper plates for Olympic lifting.
To keep plates secure mid-set, each barbell listing includes collars, and spares are inexpensive — barbell collars are £5.99 a pair and spring clips just £3.99. You can browse everything together in our weights and bars range if you are building a setup from scratch.
Save With Barbell and Weight Plate Bundles
Buying your bar and plates together is usually the most cost-effective route. The 107.5kg tri-grip set with 7ft Olympic bar is £320 — a complete starting point for squats, presses and deadlifts — while the 157.5kg set at £450 gives stronger lifters more headroom. Prefer rubber? The black bumper plate set with barbell is £470.
For arm-focused training, the EZ curl bar and tri-grip plates bundle is £119. See all combinations in our weight plate sets collection, with UK delivery details on our Delivery Information page.
Barbell FAQs
How much does an Olympic barbell weigh?
Our 7ft Olympic barbell weighs 20kg, the standard weight used in most gyms. The 6ft Olympic barbell weighs 15kg, making it a popular choice for smaller spaces and lighter lifters. Remember to include the bar weight when you count up your total lift.
Should I buy a 6ft or 7ft barbell?
Choose the 7ft bar if you use a squat rack or bench, as its length fits standard rack uprights and matches what you would lift in a commercial gym. The 6ft bar suits garage and home gyms where space is limited, and its 15kg weight makes it easier to handle when starting out.
What weight plates fit these barbells?
All bars in this collection have Olympic 2" (50mm) sleeves, so they fit any Olympic-bore plate — including our tri-grip plates, cast iron plates and bumper plates. Standard 1" plates will not fit an Olympic sleeve.
What is an EZ curl bar used for?
The EZ curl bar has an angled, cambered shaft designed for arm training — bicep curls, skull crushers and close-grip work. The angled grip positions your wrists more naturally than a straight bar. Ours is Olympic-sleeved, so it takes the same 50mm plates as a full-size bar.
What is a hex trap bar used for?
The hex trap bar is a hexagonal frame you stand inside, gripping neutral handles at your sides. It is most commonly used for deadlifts, shrugs and loaded carries, keeping the weight in line with your body through the lift.
Do your barbells come with collars?
Yes — the 7ft, 6ft and EZ curl barbells are all supplied with collars to keep your plates secure. Spare or replacement collars cost £5.99, and lightweight spring clips are £3.99 if you want a quick-change option.
Can I buy a barbell and plates together?
Yes. Our weight plate sets pair a bar with plates in one order — from the £119 EZ curl and tri-grip bundle up to the 157.5kg tri-grip set with 7ft Olympic bar at £450, plus bumper plate and barbell sets.
