Bumper Plates vs Cast Iron Weight Plates
The difference comes down to one question: will you drop the bar? Bumper plates are made from solid rubber around a steel insert, so they can be dropped from height — after a heavy clean, snatch or deadlift — without wrecking your bar, your plates or the floor beneath them. Cast iron plates cost less per kilo and take up less sleeve space, but they must be lowered under control every rep.
If your programme includes Olympic lifts, CrossFit-style WODs or deadlifts taken to failure, bumpers earn their price quickly. If you never let go of the bar, browse the wider weight plates range and put the saving towards more weight.
Black or Colour Bumper Plates?
Both of our bumper ranges cover 5kg to 25kg with the standard 50mm Olympic bore — the choice is practical and visual. Black bumper plates start from £33.99 and are the understated, cost-effective pick for a home or garage gym. Colour bumper plates, from £40.99, make each weight instantly recognisable across the room — handy in a busy training space, and the look most people associate with a competition platform.
Performance-wise you are getting the same solid rubber construction either way, so pick the finish that suits your gym and your budget.
Building an Olympic Lifting Setup at Home
Bumpers do their best work on the right bar. Their 50mm bore matches the Olympic 2" sleeves on every bar in our bars collection, and the full-size 7ft 20kg Olympic barbell is the natural partner for lifts taken from the floor. A run of thick rubber tiles from our gym flooring range underneath completes the platform and protects the slab below.
To get everything in one order, the black bumper set with barbell is £470 and the colour set with barbell £560 — both covering 5kg through 25kg. More combinations live in our weight plate sets collection.
Bumper Plates FAQs
Can bumper plates be dropped?
Yes — that is exactly what they are built for. Bumper plates are solid rubber with a steel insert, designed to be dropped from height during Olympic lifting, CrossFit-style workouts and heavy deadlifts without damaging the plates, your barbell or the floor.
Do bumper plates fit a standard Olympic barbell?
Yes. Our bumper plates use the standard 50mm Olympic bore, so they fit any bar with 2" sleeves — including the 7ft 20kg Olympic barbell and the other bars in our bars collection.
What weights do bumper plates come in?
Both our black and colour bumper ranges run from 5kg up to 25kg, sold in a full spread of weights between. Black bumpers start from £33.99 per plate and colour bumpers from £40.99 — open either product page to see every weight option.
Should I buy black or colour bumper plates?
The construction is the same — solid rubber with a 50mm steel insert. Black bumpers cost less and suit a clean, minimal home gym. Colour bumpers make each weight identifiable at a glance, which is useful in shared or commercial spaces and gives your setup a competition-style look.
Can I use bumper plates alongside iron plates?
They share the same 50mm bore, so they physically fit together on one bar. However, if iron plates are on the bar you should not drop it — only the bumpers are built to absorb the impact. Keep dropped lifts to bumper-only loading.
Do I need special flooring for bumper plates?
Bumpers absorb much of the impact themselves, but thick rubber tiles underneath protect your subfloor, cut noise and keep landings predictable. Our rubber gym flooring comes in thicknesses up to 40mm for dedicated lifting areas.
Can I buy bumper plates as a set with a barbell?
Yes. The black bumper 5kg–25kg set with barbell is £470 and the colour version is £560 — a complete Olympic setup in one order. See our weight plate sets for all bundles.
