Cast Iron, Tri-Grip or Bumper Plates: What's the Difference?
Three plate types cover almost every training style. Cast iron weight plates are the traditional option — slim, dense and the cheapest way to load a bar, starting from £4.99. Tri-grip plates wrap cast iron in a tough rubber coating and add three built-in handles, so they are kinder to floors and far easier to carry and load. Bumper plates are solid rubber with a steel insert, built to be dropped from height for Olympic lifting and heavy deadlift work.
If you mainly squat, bench and row with controlled reps, iron or tri-grip plates do the job for less. If your training involves dropping the bar, bumpers are the only sensible choice.
Will These Plates Fit Your Barbell?
Our plates use Olympic 50mm bore sizing, made to fit standard 7ft Olympic barbells — and any other bar with 2" sleeves, including 6ft bars, EZ curl bars and trap bars from our bars collection. That single standard means one set of plates works across every bar you own, from curls in the corner to deadlifts on the platform.
If you are still on a 1" standard bar, note that Olympic plates will not fit its narrower sleeves — moving to an Olympic setup is worth doing first, and you can browse bars and plates side by side in our weights and bars range.
Weight Plate Sets for Faster Setups
Starting from zero? A complete set gets you lifting in one delivery. The 107.5kg tri-grip set with 7ft Olympic bar is £320, and the 157.5kg version is £450 for lifters who need more plates on the bar. On the rubber side, the black bumper plate set with barbell is £470, or £560 for the colour-coded version.
You will find every combination in our weight plate sets collection — a simpler and typically better-value route than picking plates one pair at a time.
Building Up Your Plates Over Time
You do not have to buy everything at once. Because each product on this page is sold across a range of weights, you can start with the pairs you will actually lift and add heavier plates as you get stronger. Tri-grip plates start from £7.99, black bumper plates from £33.99, and cast iron from £4.99 — so topping up a home gym stays affordable.

Weight Plates FAQs
Which weight plates are best for a home gym?
It depends on how you lift. For controlled barbell work, rubber-coated tri-grip plates are easy to handle and protect your floor. If you drop the bar — Olympic lifts or heavy deadlifts — choose bumper plates. Cast iron is the budget option for steady, controlled training.
Will these plates fit my barbell?
Our plates use the Olympic 50mm bore, which fits standard 7ft Olympic barbells and any other bar with 2" sleeves — including the 6ft, EZ curl and trap bars in our bars collection. They will not fit older 1" standard bars.
Can I drop my weight plates?
Only bumper plates are designed to be dropped — they are solid rubber with a steel insert, made to absorb impacts from height. Cast iron and tri-grip plates should always be lowered under control, as dropping them risks damaging the plates, your bar and your floor.
Are rubber-coated plates better than bare cast iron?
Rubber-coated tri-grip plates are quieter on the bar, gentler on racks and flooring, and their handles make loading easier. Bare cast iron plates are slimmer and cheaper, letting you fit more weight on the sleeve for less. Both load the bar just the same.
Is it cheaper to buy a weight plate set?
A bundled set is usually the best-value way to start, because the bar and plates arrive together in one order. Our weight plate sets range from the £119 EZ curl bundle to complete 157.5kg tri-grip and 5kg–25kg bumper sets with a 7ft barbell.
Can I mix different plate types on the same bar?
Yes — tri-grip, cast iron and bumper plates all share the 50mm Olympic bore, so they fit the same sleeves. Just avoid dropping a mixed bar: only the bumpers are built to take the impact, so treat a mixed load as you would iron.
What weights do your plates come in?
Each plate type is sold across a range of weights — bumper plates run from 5kg to 25kg, and tri-grip and cast iron plates are available in multiple denominations from small change-plates upwards. Open any product page to see every weight and pair option available.
Do you deliver weight plates across the UK?
Yes — every order ships within the UK, with options and timescales shown at checkout. See our Delivery Information page for full details and our Warranty page for what is covered after your plates arrive.
