Equipping A PT Studio Or Small Gym: Kit, Space And Flooring

Quick answer

A PT studio or small gym needs a rubber floor across the training area, a run of hex dumbbells on a rack, one or two adjustable benches and kettlebells, then a bar and plates if there's room for a 183cm or 220cm bar. Where barbells aren't dropped, our published uses point to 20mm tiles throughout; we don't sell racks, rigs or machines other than Concept2.

Twenty pairs of rubber hex dumbbells, 2.5kg to 50kg, on a 323cm three-tier storage rack

A PT studio or small gym needs four things first: a rubber floor across the training area, a run of hex dumbbells on a rack, one or two adjustable benches and some kettlebells. A bar and plates come next if the room takes a 183cm or 220cm bar with space to load it. Where barbells aren't dropped, the published uses for our tiles point to 20mm throughout.

We sell the floor and most of that kit. We don't sell power racks, rigs, cable or weight-stack machines, treadmills or plate storage, so this guide says where to plan around them. It sticks to equipment: sizes, storage, flooring and delivery, not training advice.

What equipment does a PT studio need?

Start with the floor and the free weights you'll use in nearly every session, then add benches, a bar and plates, and conditioning kit as space allows. The table shows what we sell for each part of a studio and where to look for the rest.

Part of the studio From our range What we don't sell
Floor Rubber gym flooring: 1 m × 1 m tiles, 10mm to 40mm, black or white fleck Installation: we supply only
Dumbbells Hex dumbbell sets with racks, single pairs from 1kg to 50kg, and the set builder Adjustable dumbbells: ours are rubber hex only
Benches Flat and adjustable weight benches, both rated to 250kg including the lifter
Bars and plates 7ft and 6ft Olympic bars, an EZ curl bar, a hex trap bar, and cast iron, tri-grip and bumper plates, all 50mm Power racks, squat stands, rigs, plate trees, wall storage
Kettlebells Cast iron kettlebells from 4kg to 40kg, sold singly
Conditioning Slam balls, a sled pulling battle rope, a prowler sled, sled track turf and a 3-in-1 plyo box: see conditioning
Cardio Concept2 RowErg, BikeErg and SkiErg Treadmills, cross trainers
Machines Cable and weight-stack machines

Everything we sell for a studio is together in weights and home gym equipment, with live prices and stock.

How much floor space does each piece need?

Plan the room from the published sizes, then leave space to use and load each piece. A dumbbell set on an A-frame rack stands on less than one 1 m tile, the 3-tier racks are 57cm deep and up to 323cm long, and a 7ft bar is 220cm long before you add room at each end to load plates.

Item Published size On 1 m tiles
6-tier A-frame dumbbell rack 59 × 36cm, 105cm high Less than 1 tile
10-tier A-frame dumbbell rack 61 × 47cm, 130cm high Less than 1 tile
3-tier dumbbell racks 111, 153, 217 or 323cm long, 57cm deep, 103cm high A strip 2 to 4 tiles long and 1 tile deep
Flat weight bench 130 × 50cm, 44cm high 2 tiles end to end
Adjustable weight bench 143 × 71cm, 51cm high 2 tiles end to end
Olympic EZ curl bar 120cm long, 8kg –
6ft Olympic bar 183cm long, 15kg 2 tiles across, plus loading room
7ft Olympic bar 220cm long, 20kg 3 tiles across, plus loading room
Concept2 RowErg 244 × 61cm; Concept2 recommends 274 × 122cm to use it 3 m × 2 m
Concept2 BikeErg 122 × 61cm; 152 × 122cm to use it 2 m × 2 m
Concept2 SkiErg on its floor stand 127 × 60cm; needs a ceiling above 216cm 2 m × 1 m
Sled track turf 10 × 1 m, 10 × 2 m or 15 × 2 m A straight run of 10 m or 15 m, longer than many studios

The sizes come from our product pages and Concept2's specifications, checked on 9 October 2026. For the Concept2 machines in more detail, see RowErg vs BikeErg vs SkiErg.

How a 6 m × 8 m studio fits together. The 323cm rack with the 2.5kg–50kg run stands along one 8 m wall and comes 57cm into the room. A RowErg's 3 m × 2 m area fits in a corner. That leaves the middle of the floor for two adjustable benches (143 × 71cm each) and the space to use them, and a 220cm bar fits across the 6 m width with room to load it. A sled track won't fit: even the 10 m track is longer than the room.

Which dumbbell run and rack suit a studio?

A studio usually wants a run of pairs in even steps, so there's no gap between the weights on the rack. Our sets with every 2.5kg step from 2.5kg run to 30kg, 40kg or 50kg on a 3-tier rack, and the 1kg to 10kg set in 1kg steps comes on a 10-tier A-frame. Choose the run by the wall you have for its rack.

Set Pairs Weights (kg, per dumbbell) Total weight Rack, L × H × D
1kg–10kg set 10 1 to 10 in 1kg steps 110kg 10-tier A-frame, 61 × 130 × 47cm
2.5kg–30kg set, 153cm rack 12 2.5 to 30 in 2.5kg steps 390kg 3-tier, 153 × 103 × 57cm
2.5kg–40kg set, 217cm rack 16 2.5 to 40 in 2.5kg steps 680kg 3-tier, 217 × 103 × 57cm
2.5kg–50kg set, 323cm rack 20 2.5 to 50 in 2.5kg steps 1,050kg 3-tier, 323 × 103 × 57cm
  • Racks for a full run. The 217cm rack holds the 2.5kg–40kg run and the 323cm rack the 2.5kg–50kg run. Both are sold on their own in dumbbell racks.
  • Fixed weight. Hex dumbbells are fixed weight: nothing loads onto them. To extend a run later, add single pairs from 1kg to 50kg.
  • Other ranges. The set builder offers ranges from 5kg up to 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 or 50kg, in 5kg or 2.5kg steps, with or without a rack.
  • Tolerance. Each dumbbell is within ±3% of its stated weight, the tolerance on the product pages.

All ten of our sets, with their racks and the space each takes, are compared in hex dumbbell sets with racks: how to choose.

What flooring does a PT studio need?

Match the floor to what happens on it. Where clients use dumbbells, benches and machines but don't drop barbells, the published uses for our tiles point to 20mm throughout, with no steps between zones. Rack areas and heavy strength training take 30mm, and Olympic lifting takes 40mm. The tiles are classified Bfl-s1 for reaction to fire (SGS tested).

Worked example: a 6 m × 8 m studio in 20mm. The floor is 48m², so 48 tiles before any cutting. On 10 October 2026, in the basket:

Tiles Before discount Bulk discount Per tile after discount You pay
48 £1,151.52 10% (25 to 49 tiles) £21.60 £1,036.80
50 £1,199.50 15% (50 to 99 tiles) £20.40 £1,020.00

On 10 October 2026, 50 tiles cost £16.80 less than 48, because the basket takes the discount off each £23.99 tile. Allow for cuts at the walls too: see how many gym floor tiles you need. The discount is applied automatically and counts every tile in the order, across thicknesses and colours. At about 17.5kg a tile, 50 tiles weigh around 875kg, so they come on a pallet, delivered free to the UK mainland.

  • Is 20mm enough for a small studio? Studio owners often ask us this. It is, on the published uses, unless barbells are dropped: see how thick gym flooring should be for each thickness.
  • Barbells dropped often? If they are, choose the thicker of the two thicknesses that fit the zone, as the commercial guide explains.
  • Writing a specification. Thickness by zone, the fire class, the size tolerance and an example specification are in commercial gym flooring: a specification guide.

Which bars, plates and benches suit a studio?

All our bars and plates are 50mm Olympic, so every plate fits every bar we sell. The 7ft bar weighs 20kg and the 6ft bar 15kg; both are rated to 317kg and have 131cm between the sleeves. Benches come flat or adjustable, and both are rated to 250kg including the lifter.

  • Bars. The 7ft Olympic bar and the 6ft Olympic bar come with collars. The 6ft bar's product page says its 131cm shaft fits most squat and power racks, which matters if you buy a rack elsewhere. There's also an 8kg EZ curl bar, rated to 136kg, and a hex trap bar.
  • Plates. Choose cast iron or rubber-coated tri-grip plates for general lifting, or rubber bumper plates, 5kg to 25kg in black or colour, for repeated dropping. Bar and plate sets are in plates and bars.
  • Benches. The adjustable bench has 7 backrest and 4 seat positions, covering flat, incline and decline. The flat bench is 130 × 50cm. A studio running two clients at once may want two.
Adjustable weight bench with its backrest raised to an incline
The adjustable bench: 7 backrest and 4 seat positions, rated to 250kg including the lifter.

Which kettlebells and conditioning kit?

Kettlebells are sold one at a time from 4kg to 40kg, colour coded by weight, so a studio can buy exactly the sizes it needs. For conditioning we sell slam balls (3kg to 30kg, sold individually), a sled pulling battle rope in 9m or 12m, a competition prowler sled, sled track turf and a 3-in-1 wooden plyo box, plus Concept2's RowErg, BikeErg and SkiErg.

  • Sled track. The turf has a 25mm pile and comes as one rolled piece per track: 10 × 1 m, 10 × 2 m or 15 × 2 m. The 1 m-wide track has distance numbers; the 2 m tracks don't. It's for indoor use and isn't weatherproof, and a studio needs a straight 10 m or 15 m run for it.
  • Kettlebell storage. Our 3-tier kettlebell racks come in 111cm and 153cm lengths; check the product page for stock.

For how the conditioning kit fits a smaller space, see conditioning kit for a home gym.

What don't we sell, and how do you plan around it?

We don't sell squat or power racks, rigs, cable or weight-stack machines, treadmills, cross trainers, plate trees, wall storage for plates or bars, or yoga and exercise mats. If your studio plan includes them, buy them elsewhere and plan the floor and the wall space around them before you order.

  • Racks. Check the distance between the rack's uprights against our bars: 131cm between the sleeves on the 6ft and 7ft bars. Put the rack on a zone of 30mm tiles if heavy barbells will be used in it.
  • Plate storage. Without a plate tree or wall storage, leave floor space beside the bar for plates.
  • Machines and treadmills. We hold no static or point-load rating for machines standing on the tiles. Ask the machine's maker what it needs underneath.

How do you order and take delivery of a studio fit-out?

Contact us with the products, quantities, your delivery postcode, any access limits and your deadline, and we'll send a written quote. For flooring the quote uses the same bulk tiers as the website, so you can also order online. A VAT invoice comes with every order confirmation.

  • Delivery. Orders over 100kg come on a pallet, on a rigid lorry with a tail-lift, to the kerbside only, and someone needs to be there to receive it. You move everything from the kerb, so have enough people there: the 50 tiles above weigh about 875kg before any dumbbells. If access is restricted, ask for a smaller 7.5-tonne vehicle. Delivery is free on UK mainland orders over £300. Items in the same order may arrive on different days.
  • Timing. Pallets typically arrive 2 working days after dispatch. These are courier estimates, so don't book a fitter for the delivery day itself.
  • The full terms. Quotes, data sheets, holding an order, collection and split deliveries are covered in the commercial guide's quotes and delivery sections, and on our delivery information page.

Other questions

Can I see the flooring before I order? Order a sample: 10cm × 10cm, in the thickness and finish you choose. The sample is free and you pay £7.99 postage.

Do you have discount codes for studios? No. The bulk discount on floor tiles is applied automatically from 10 tiles, rising to 25% from 200. There are no codes, NHS or student discounts.

Is Concept2 cheaper if I buy it with other kit? No. Concept2 machines are supplied direct from Concept2, so there's no extra discount in a bundle.

Can the tiles go over underfloor heating? We hold no tested thermal resistance (R-value or tog) figure for the tiles. Rubber insulates, so it reduces the heat reaching the room. Check with your heating designer or installer before ordering, and see what you can lay rubber gym flooring on.

How should a busy studio clean the floor? Vacuum or sweep with a soft brush, then damp mop with a flat microfibre mop and a pH-neutral cleaner made for rubber flooring. Avoid string mops and excess water, which can seep between the tiles. See how to clean rubber gym flooring.

About this guide

This guide is for personal trainers and small-gym owners fitting out a studio. It's based on our product pages and help centre (checked 9 and 10 October 2026), Concept2's published specifications, our delivery and bulk-discount terms, and the questions studio owners send us. The 6 m × 8 m floor is a worked example priced in our basket on 10 October 2026, not a real installation; prices change, so the product cards show today's prices. We sell the flooring and equipment described here. For a home rather than a studio, see what equipment you need for a home gym.
